Thermo-lag is the trade name for a family of patented, subliming,
heat blocking materials that have been used extensively for the protection of structural steel, bulkheads, electrical cables and electrical raceways, oil and gas piping/ risers, storage tanks, aluminium, magnesium, composites, etc.

Exposure to high heat triggers the process of "sublimation"- a chemical reaction that utilizes vast quantities of heat. A familiar example is the reaction of "dry ice" which vaporizes when exposed to heat. Vaporization of Thermo-lag 270 in this reaction not only uses the heat to delay its penetration to the cables but also creates an overflow of gases, which is effective in blocking heat input during the sublimation process.
THERMO-Lag 270 is easy to apply by spraying or trowelling methods. . A 1/16 inch thick coating meets the stringent Factory Mutual Research requirements and is the thinnest coverage approved by Factory mutual. It is easily patched to permit cable replacement or repairs.

THERMO-Lag 270 was developed to meet the need for a protective shield that would help assure the continued operation of critical electrical systems required to enable an orderly shutdown of plant operations in case of fire. It is also used to protect combustible insulation against ignition, which could spread the fire. NOTE: Cables protected with THERMO_Lag 270 require no derating when applied at the recommended thickness
